We invite you to read the Quran, and learn about Islam for yourself. The Arabic Quran was revealed over 1400 years ago. Many ancient copies of the Quran still exist in museums today(1)(2).

As Muslims we feel very blessed to have copies of the original text of our holy scripture, which was revealed in a language, Arabic, that is still in common daily use throughout the world. We invite you to read an English translation of this text, with open mind and heart.

The Quran that we send is a soft-cover, standard English translation by Yusuf Ali of the meaning of the Quran, published by Goodword Books. There is no Arabic text. Included with the Quran is an introductory packet about Islam. Please note that we only ship to addresses within the United States.

The Quran is a book of divine warning —
a combination of lessons and admonitions.
It stresses the importance of man’s
discovery of truth at the level of realization.

Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death.

Man is born as an eternal creature. When God created man as such, He divided his life span into two periods, the pre-death period, which is a time of trial, and the post-death period, which is the time for receiving the rewards or punishment merited by one’s actions during one’s lifetime.

The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality. This is the theme of this divine Book, which serves to guide man through his entire journey through life into the after-life.
Our new Muslim brother, we say “asalaamu alaikum”, and welcome to Islam!
Embracing Islam means that you have started a new life, with a clean slate. All your past sins and mistakes are forgiven by Allah, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Regarding your requests, if you live within the US we can mail you a Quran. Please email your US mailing address. If you live in the UK, then please contact one of the many masjids in the UK, and insha’Allah they will be able to provide you with materials.
There are several links on our website as well which provide a lot of authentic information about Islam. Scroll down and look on the right-hand side, you will see several links.
If you would like to change your name, that is normally a matter that you handle through the courts in your area. Islamically, it is not required to change your name unless your original name has an unpleasant or un-Islamic meaning. In your case we do not believe that any of these conditions exist, so you may keep your original name, “Philip”, or change it, as you wish.
If you change your name, it is preferable to keep your family name, unless it has some negative meaning. So for example in your case as your original name is “Philip Fernandes”, then you could change it to “Faisal al-Rashid Fernandes”. This is because Islam respects family relations, and to keep the lineage clear.
We encourage you to learn Arabic, as this will help you better understand the Qur’an. Alhamdulillah, Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) in His Wisdom has made us from all background and ethnicities. The best thing for you to do is to learn as much as you can about Islam, and then teach those around you and share the message of Islam with your friends, family and neighbors. Instead of trying to become someone else, be who you are, study the Quran and Sunnah, and strive to develop your character to follow the example of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as much as you can.
Once again, we congratulate you and extend to you our warmest welcome!

Regarding your name, when we checked the meaning of “Patrick” online we saw that it has a positive meaning, so it is not necessary to change it upon becoming Muslim. As long as one’s name does not have a negative meaning, or have a meaning that is contrary to Islam, then it is fine to keep one’s given name. If a person does decide to change his/her name, then s/he should only change the first name and not the last name, in order to maintain one’s family ties and lineage.
When one becomes Muslim, all previous sins are erased, and it is as though one has a clean slate. This is one of the many examples of God’s love for and mercy towards us.

Choosing a name is a very personal matter. A name can affect one’s character and outlook on life. This is why it’s recommended in Islam to change one’s first name if it has a meaning which is contrary to Islam.
A name also indicates one’s family relationship. For this reason, it is generally preferred to keep one’s original last name, in order to maintain the family connection. However, if one does not know the family name of his or her birth parents, as is common in the case of adoption, then it is fine to change one’s last name for another.
Many people who want to reflect their Islamic beliefs through their name choose to say that they are a servant of God, or they choose the name of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) or one of his companions.
